New Roadmap for CCUS in the Baltic & Mediterranean
Excited to share our latest publication in Frontiers in Earth Science: “A framework for regional high-level technical screening of promising CCUS value chains”.
Leaders of SHOGenergy, Dr Kazbulat Shogenov and Dr Alla Shogenova (representing Department of Geology | TalTech, Tallinn University of Technology) and colleagues from universities across Europe within the CCUS ZEN project, introduce a framework to identify the most promising CCUS hubs and value chains in regions where deployment is still emerging.
⸻
🔍 Highlights
• The Baltic region shows 3× higher storage potential than the Mediterranean.
•~800 facilities emit ~700 MtCO₂/year across both regions.
•8 priority CCUS value chains identified (4 in each region).
•Case study: Southern Italy & Greece demonstrate storage capacity for centuries, if infrastructure is developed.
⸻
✅ Why it matters
•CCUS is vital for Europe’s climate goals.
•Regional hubs & clusters can cut costs, reduce risks, and speed up deployment.
•Our framework offers a practical tool for industry, infrastructure planners and policymakers to shape future CCUS initiatives.
