EU CCUS Forum 2023

Dr. Kazbulat Shogenov, representing SHOGenergy and TalTech (Department of Geology), participated in the 3rd EU Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Forum, organized by The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities together with the European Commission, on 27-28 November in Aalborg, Denmark.

The aim of the event was to bring together stakeholders from industry, member states, EU institutions, NGOs, academia, and more to engage in meaningful discussions on accelerating the deployment of CCUS technologies in Europe.

The Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, the Danish Minister of Climate, Energy, and Utilities Lars Aagaard, and the Director-General for Energy at the European Commission, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, participated in the Forum as speakers. The CCUS Forum was opened by the Mayor of Aalborg, Lasse Frimand Jensen.

The event was attended by approximately 700 participants from across Europe. It was amazing to see so many people involved in CCUS, including officials, industry representatives, and researchers.

Big appreciation to Denmark for permitting CO2 storage in the Danish offshore (North Sea). Two licenses were granted to TotalEnergies and one to the INEOS & Wintershall consortium. I hope this action motivates the governments of Baltic Sea Region countries to update the Helsinki Convention and national CCS regulations to permit CO2 geological storage both onshore and offshore under the Baltic seabed.

At the Forum, we shared information about our new HERCCULES project (Horizon Europe), established new contacts with industrial partners, and met old friends and partners from Riga Technical University, Danish Geological Survey, Equinor, and others.

More news:

  • The 2023 report of the International Energy Agency is ready (World Energy Outlook 2023)
  • The Netherlands signed an agreement last week to transport and store 800k tons of CO2 in the North Sea (Portos project).

But we are still far from achieving the previously set goals of the European Commission.
