EU CCUS Forum 2023

Dr. Kazbulat Shogenov representing SHOGenergy company and TalTech (Department of Geology) participated at the 3rd EU Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Forum organized by The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities together with the European Commission on 27-28 November in Aalborg, Denmark.

The aim of this event was to bring together stakeholders from industry, member states, EU institutions, NGOs, academia and many more to engage in meaningful discussions on accelerating the deployment of CCUS technologies in Europe.

The Commissioner for Energy, my countrywoman Kadri Simson, the Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard and the Director-General for Energy at the European Commission, Ditte Juul Jørgensen participated at the Forum as speakers. The CCUS Forum was opened by major of Aalborg Lasse Frimand Jensen.

The event was attended by approximately 700 participants from all over Europe. It was amazing to see so many people involved in CCUS: officials, industry representatives, researchers…

Big appreciation to Denmark, whose government allowed CO2 storage in the Danish offshore (North Sea). Two licenses were granted to TotalEnergies and one to the INEOS & Wintershall consortium.  I hope this action could be a positive reason for the governments of the Baltic Sea Region countries to update the Helsinki Convention and national CCS regulations to permit CO2 geological storage both onshore and offshore under the Baltic seabed.

Shared at the Forum information about our new HERCCULES project (Horizon Europe), established new contacts with industrial partners, and met old friends and partners from Riga Technical University, Danish Geological Survey, Equinor, etc.

But we are still far from the previously set goals of the EC…
