Field Trip: Natural Hydrogen in the Pyrenean Piedmont

As part of the global geoscience event EAGE Annual 2025 (June 2โ€“5, Toulouse, France), we joined a fascinating field trip exploring natural hydrogen systems in the Pyrenean foothills โ€” from source rocks to potential reservoirs.

๐Ÿ“โ›ฐ๏ธ Near the town of Pau, we studied geological formations, tested a field-based soil hydrogen detection method, and enjoyed stunning Alpine views.

ย Weโ€™ll apply this detection technique in the upcoming fieldwork in the Baltic region with my new PhD student.

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ While I still believe our remote sensing innovation โ€” SGEN-NMR (space-based subsurface hydrogen detection via NMR) โ€” is far more advanced, field tools remain essential parts of the exploration toolkit.

๐Ÿชจ Collected Hโ‚‚ samples, analyzed outcrops, and observed rare mantle rock exposures stretching over 70 km deep.

๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŒ Future scientists โ€” join us at TalTech Geology Institute to explore Earth, develop energy solutions, and tackle global challenges!

โ˜๏ธ At SHOGenergy, weโ€™re building big ideas, scientific careers, and innovative hydrogen projects. Join the mission.

๐Ÿ‘Š Letโ€™s go!

๐Ÿซต The world needs scientists more than ever. Be part of the solution.
