Opinion of TalTech researchers and CEO of SHOGenergy— at the centre of energy security and economic discussion in “Äripäev”

Estonia’s leading business publication, Äripäev, has brought the future of the country’s energy market to its front page. The newspaper featured Raivo Vare and TalTech Institute of Geology researcher Kazbulat Shogenov, PhD in geological CO2 storage, CEO of SHOGenergy, as key experts shaping the agenda.
The discussion centres on the critical situation with CO2 allowance prices, which have reached €100 per tonne. The publication places our researcher’s scientific analysis on par with the positions of leading experts in economics and public administration, emphasising that a way out of the energy deadlock is impossible without a scientific approach.
While the market is unsettled by the unpredictability of quotas, Kazbulat Shogenov provides a reasoned argument: the implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technologies has shifted from a “future plan” to a present-day economic necessity.
The scientist emphasises that developing CO2 storage infrastructure is the only way to maintain the competitiveness of both Estonian energy producers and the entire local business sector, while protecting consumers from price spikes.
The participation of our researchers in high-level discussions of this calibre confirms TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology’s mission: we are not only engaged in fundamental science; we offer concrete solutions to ensure energy security and economic stability for Estonia and the entire Baltic region.
“We have long predicted that a moment would come when quota prices would make capture technology more viable than any other alternative. That moment has arrived,” notes Kazbulat Shogenov in the Äripäev feature.
