Estonian researchers at 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Toulouse

🇪🇪 Estonian researchers at 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Toulouse, France (MEETT Toulouse)

[02.06-06.06.2025]

A powerful community of geoscience & engineering experts, leaders and next-generation talents gathered at the 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Toulouse on 2-6 June. 🇪🇺 EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers), as one of the most significant geoscience professional associations in the world, plays a vital role in the transition of fossil-fuel-targeted activities to renewables and storage-targeted education, research and business.

  • ℹ️ MEETT Toulouse is one of the largest exhibition venues in France outside Paris, covering approximately 155,000 m². It was the first venue in France to receive the “Haute Qualité Environnementale” (High Environmental Quality) certification at the “exceptional” level.

  • Dr Alla Shogenova (senior researcher at TalTech and director of research at SHOGenergy) and Dr Kazbulat Shogenov (scientific researcher at TalTech and founder and CEO at SHOGenergy) are EAGE members.
  • This year, over 6,000 people registered onsite for the EAGE Annual conference and exhibition, and 1,300+ presentations were given.
  • One of the conference’s most popular themes was CO2 and H2 (Hydrogen) Storage. Since the last decade, the EAGE community has shifted strongly toward CCUS (CO2 capture and geological storage) and H2 topics, sustainable energy use, and renewables.
  • The conference hosts presentations and exhibits from all key sectors in geosciences—from academic institutions and consulting firms to global oil and gas corporations. Topics include cutting-edge advances in AI-driven research, modelling, and interpretation, with a strong focus on Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), and a new dedicated track on hydrogen technologies. Over 200 exhibition booths are featured this year, with top-tier experts and industry leaders in attendance. Notably, Italian ENI and UK-based Shell did not participate this year, while Saudi Aramco made a strong return—now branding themselves as leaders in blue hydrogen and CCUS solutions.

  • On June 5, Dr. K. Shogenov and Dr. A. Shogenova presented preliminary results of the ongoing CTS project, which focuses on the direct injection of CO2 from ships. SHOGenergy is participating as the modeller for the Baltic Scenario. Their poster, titled “Game-Changing CCUS Technology: Direct Injection from a Ship in the Baltic Sea,” was one of the most visually appealing and well-designed at the poster session, standing out in contrast to the more standard posters.
  • Flyers with information about another ongoing, largest-in-Europe CCUS project, HERCCULES, were spread at the conference as part of a dissemination action within this project (more info about HERCCULES)
  • Additionally, a technology for remote subsurface investigation using satellite data in combination with nuclear magnetic resonance SGEN-NMR was promoted at the conference.
  • 🇪🇪 For the first time, Dr Alla Shogenova and Dr Kazbulat Shogenov are representing not TalTech, but a research and consulting company, ShogEnergy, at this conference.

  • 🛰️🌍 Additionally, I promoted a technology for remote subsurface investigation using satellite data in combination with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

🙏 Their participation in the EAGE Annual was supported by the CTS project (with direct financial support from the Estonian Ministry of Climate –Kliimaministeerium) and the HERCCULES project. We thank these institutions so much for their support.

👨‍🏫 Dr Alla Shogenova is an EAGE member and has participated in the annual EAGE conferences since 1996.

👨‍🔬 Dr Kazbulat Shogenov has been an EAGE member since 2006 and an EAGE reviewer since 2007. He has been taking part in reviewing extended EAGE abstracts for many years and has been invited several times to convene the EAGE technical sessions.
